Zhang Xuehai

Born in 1966, Chengde, Zhang Xuehai graduated from Chengde Normal University with a degree in Fine Arts in 1990 before furthering his training at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1997. He is currently a fulltime artist in Song Zhuang.

Commentary:

Zhang Xuehai’s US series began with the horror of SARS, which was intensified by the war in the Middle East. Everyone then felt the weakness of the human body. The power of nature caused one to feel helplessly small but the disaster caused by man could have been averted. News of death surrounded everyone, there was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. This led to Zhang Xuehai painting US, a series that was dark, depressing and full of hurt. Through these works, Zhang Xuehai provokes one to think about the conditions of human existence, at the same time raising questions about progress, beauty and truth.
